Epidemics are strucking the Earth
Major epidemics have struck the Earth once in a while. In the future they may be caused by biological war as mentioned in the section about war an terror, or they are just starting "by themselves".
The Bird Flu/Avian Flu
These days, we are threatened by the Bird Flu, or the Avian Flu as it also is called. It is still a virus (H5N1) carried mainly by birds, and the few people that are killed by it, have been in very close contact with infected birds. The real danger is if the virus is mutating, and is starting to infect between us human beings. This may cause thousands of deads, maybe millions. But humankind will in no doubt survive even such a catastrophe.
The Black Death and AIDS
The Black Death killed a big part of the people on the Earth, but "soon" the humankind was growing again as never before. AIDS is now reducing the population in some countries with a large amount, especially in Africa. But nobody believe that it will kill all of us! AIDS is also a good example of how epidemics may be influenced by human actions.
